A first port of call once you have sunned yourself on the beach is to take the funicular to
the town of Sitio perched on the cliffs. It is here that the Nossa Senhora da Nazare Church
can be found complete with two Baroque belfries and the image of Our Lady of Nazareth
which led to the foundation of the town. Opposite the church is the original Capella da Me-
moria which was built by Dom Faus Rouphino with tiles inside the chapel depicting the
story. Along the seafront, restaurants serving superb seafood, craft shops, and cafés stretch
for kilometres until the beach of São Martinho do Porto which is located in a protected bay
and extremely popular with families and tourists who aren't fond of the strong waves else-
where along the coastline.
