Glossary
AICC: Aviation Industry CBT Committee (where CBT stands for com-
puter-based training) is an international association of
technology-based training professionals. The AICC has been
developing guidelines for CBT and related training technologies
since 1988. For more information about AICC and its guidelines,
see www.aicc.org.
AVI: Audio Video Interleaved format files. Movie files with the .avi
extension are generally compatible across multiple platforms and
can be imported into Captivate files as either new movies or as
animations within slides.
bandwidth: The amount of data that is transmitted from one computer
to another, usually given in megabits (Mbit) per second. A larger
file will require a larger bandwidth for transmission.
bit rate: The number of bits that are transferred per second, generally
expressed as kilobits per second (kbps), megabits per second
(Mbit), or gigabits per second (Gbit). A higher number here repre-
sents a faster transmission (or quicker download).
BMP: Microsoft Windows bitmap format for graphics.
branching: The mechanism by which you can display different slides
depending on whether or not the viewer answers a question cor-
rectly. This is often used with e-learning applications to control the
display based on student progress through a learning activity.
caption: A caption is simply a piece of text that highlights or points to a
portion of the screen. Captivate contains a variety of caption types
that display at different times depending on the viewer input. For
example, a text caption might instruct the viewer to click on a cer-
tain icon. If the viewer performs the task as instructed, a success
caption displays. If the viewer doesn't click the right area, you may
choose to display either a retry caption or a failure caption.
CBT: Computer-based training; a catchall phrase that covers any type
of instruction that is delivered via computer.
