Accommodations and Camping
Because skiers and snowboarders flock to the slopes of Hudson Bay Mountain when the
snow falls, the local lodgings are apt to be as busy in winter as in summer. The 23-room St-
ork Nest Inn (1485 Main St., 250/847-3831, www.storknestinn.com , $85 s, $100 includes
cooked breakfast) is styled on a Bavarian lodge. It features 23 comfortable rooms with air-
conditioning, wireless Internet, and small fridges. The premier accommodation in this re-
gion is the M Logpile Lodge (3105 McCabe Rd., 250/847-5152, www.logpilelodge.com ,
$119-169 s, $139-169 d), north of town (call for directions) and surrounded by a magnifi-
cent mountain panorama. Guest rooms on the upper floor have vaulted ceilings, while ex-
posed log walls dominate those on the lower floor. All seven guest rooms have solid log
beds and private balconies. A big breakfast, cooked to order, will set you up for an activity-
filled day.
Riverside Park Municipal Campground (May-Oct., $18-24) is beside the Bulkley
River, north of town. It provides shaded sites, a few electrical hookups, showers, and a
cooking shelter. Riverside Golf Course (Hwy. 16 east of town, 250/847-3229, mid-Apr.-
mid-Oct., $22-28) has better facilities and is within the bounds of a golf course.
Food
Two Sisters (3763 4th Ave., 250/877-7708, 8am-4:30pm Mon.-Fri., 9am-3pm Sat., lunches
$9-12) is a funky little space with a stylish yet uncomplicated decor. The lunch menu
changes almost daily, using mostly seasonal, locally sourced produce. Daily offerings may
include quesadillas or a beef stew—, all made from scratch by the hands-on owner sisters.
Heavenly Grinds (3835 1st Ave., 250/877-0176, 8am-5pm Mon.-Sat., lunches $6-10)
has the same welcoming, small-town ambience, with a section set aside especially from
younger children. Again, the food is all prepared daily and is preservative-free.
The best dinner dining is at Eddy Line Bistro Café (7391 Hwy. 16 W, 250/877-0122,
10:30am-8pm daily, closed Mon. and Tues. outside of summer, $14-27), along the highway
west of town near the airport. The menu is fresh and creative, with the usual mix of burgers,
pastas, and seafood, all well-prepared and well-priced.
Information
In the museum complex is Smithers Visitor Centre (1411 Court St., 250/847-5072 or
800/542-6673, www.tourismsmithers.com , 9am-6pm daily June-Aug., 9am-5pm Mon.-Fri.
Sept.-May). A good source of northern literature is Mountain Eagle Books (3775 3rd Ave.,
250/847-5245, 7:30am-6pm Mon.-Sat.), which mixes used books with fresh coffee.
