In-Depth Information
Today the most heavily traveled route through central BC is the Trans-Canada Highway,
which for the purposes of this topic also forms the region's southern boundary. In the east
of the province, the highway bisects Glacier National Park, a small but spectacular park of
glaciers and towering peaks. Heading west from the park, the highway passes the heli-ski-
ing hub of Revelstoke and the watery playground of Shuswap Lake before coming to the
large population center of Kamloops.
From Kamloops, two highways lead north. Highway 5 accesses Wells Gray and Mount
Robson Provincial Parks, the former a vast forested wilderness and the latter named for one
of the most spectacular mountain peaks in all of Canada. The other route, Highway 97, runs
through Cariboo Country, best-known for the 1860s Gold-Rush town of Barkerville, now
completely restored and one of the highlights of a trip north.
