Ranging from the western slopes of the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, central Brit-
ish Columbia holds such varied natural features as the massive Fraser River, the lofty peaks
of the Cariboo and Coast Mountains, and the deeply indented coastal fjords around Bella
Coola.
The region's history is dominated by colorful sagas of Canada's biggest Gold Rush,
when over 100,000 miners and fortune seekers passed through the area on their way to
the goldfields. However, the best-remembered man in these parts was not a miner but an
explorer. In 1793, Alexander Mackenzie left the Fraser River for the final leg of his epic
transcontinental journey. Fourteen days later he reached the Pacific Ocean, becoming the
first person to cross the continent.
