KITSILANO AND VICINITY
Hip Kitsilano and its surrounding suburbs are Vancouver's most upscale residential neigh-
borhoods south of Burrard Inlet. Accommodations in this part of the city are nearly all bed-
and-breakfasts, and these are my favorites.
Under $50
If you're on a budget and don't need to stay right downtown, HI-Vancouver Jericho Beach
(1515 Discovery St., Point Grey, 604/224-3208 or 866/762-4122, www.hihostels.ca , dorm
$33-48, private room $85-100 s or d) is a good alternative choice. The location is fantast-
ic—in scenic and safe parkland behind Jericho Beach, across English Bay from downtown,
and linked to extensive biking and walking trails. Inside the huge white building are separ-
ate dorms for men and women, rooms for couples and families, a TV room, and a commun-
al kitchen. Additional amenities include a large café operated by a local culinary school and
bike rentals. To get there, take Northwest Marine Drive off 4th Avenue West and turn right
down Discovery Street at the arts center.

On the southern edge of Shaughnessy, Beautiful B&B (428 W. 40th Ave., just off Cambie
St., 604/327-1102, www.beautifulbandb.bc.ca , $145-255 s or d) is a colonial-style two-
story home set on a high point of land where views extend across the city to the North Shore
Range. Both Queen Elizabeth Park and VanDusen Botanical Garden are within walking dis-
tance. The house is decorated with antiques and fresh flowers from the surrounding garden.
Two guest rooms share a bathroom, while the Honeymoon Suite features a fireplace, pan-
oramic views, and a huge en suite bathroom complete with soaker tub.
NORTH SHORE

Perfect as a jumping-off point for a ferry trip to the Sunshine Coast or Vancouver Island is
the Horseshoe Bay Motel (6588 Royal Ave., 604/921-7454, www.horseshoebaymotel.ca ,
$138-175 s or d), 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) west of the Lions Gate Bridge, tucked below
the highway in Horseshoe Bay and right by the BC Ferries terminal. Rooms are clean and
comfortable, but you're paying for the location more than anything.
