MV Tarahane
By 1917 the White Pass Company was already enticing tourists north with their narrow
gauge railroad, climbing 3,000 ft through the spectacular mountain passes between Skag-
way, Alaska and Whitehorse, Yukon.
Next they developed aluxurious lodge onthe shoreline ofLake Atlin topromote tourism in
the area. Over the winter of 1916-17, the company built a 78-foot gas-powered lake boat,
theMVTarahane.Thecraftwasintendedtocarrybothcargoforthegoldindustryandferry
passengers on elegant tours of the lakes system. Within ten years tourism traffic had so
overtaken the gold industry that she was hauled out, cut in half and had 30 feet added to the
middle. Now a 198-passenger vessel, she was in her prime, carrying well-heeled tourists
around the exotic northern waterways. In 1936, her final year of service, she carried 6,209
passengers.
