In-Depth Information
The road is worth taking though because it also travels up to Surprise Lake. The terrain
that way is gorgeous - lakes and mountains and streams gushing through narrow crevasses.
Further on we pass by dull grey tailing fields, the spawn of the current industrial mining
industry. The tailings brought to mind the heaps of rubble left behind by the World War II
bombers, decimating the historic brick city centers of London and Berlin. It does not look
like anyone is interested in trying to reclaim or rebuild anything up here though. The grey
gravel muck just piles up, mile after mile.
Back in town, we walked. Perched right on the shores of Atlin Lake, the setting for the
town site is simply spectacular. Now a weekday, there were some open shops and bakeries.
The Courthouse Gallery is fascinating. Or rather, the art inside is: paintings, quilt art, glass-
work, jewellery, 3-D, pottery, mosaics, antler carvings, furniture from twigs, etc. I think
those long dark winter days/nights give people up here a lot of time to perfect their craft
because the quality is unrelentingly excellent.
