Fishing on the Kenai
Valdez and the Kenai Peninsular are renowned as world class fishing destinations with some
of the biggest fish caught in Alaska reeled in from Prince William Sound. Halibut are big
here - REALLY BIG. Derby winners can top 300 pounds. All species of Pacific salmon,
rockfish, ling cod, Dolly Varden, Arctic char as well as cuthroat, rainbow and steelhead trout
are fished for. Best time for sport fishing is May to September. Non residents require a sport
fishing license from the Department of Fish and Games offices, vendors or the internet

Valdez is home to the oldest fishing derbies in Alaska. Check out the following site for exact

Basically the halibut derby runs from late May through early September. The silver salmon
derby runs from late July through August. There are also special womens and kids derbies.
Tickets are $10/day or $50 for the whole season. How could you lose?
