Designing in Line with Your Theme and Reality
If you have already drawn your storyboards and assembled your story reel, then you have a number of
sketches of your characters. If not, that is okay. While basic character design may begin before the story—
especially where the story line is driven by the character—character development continues throughout the
story development and storyboarding process. It is often useful when working on a project of this size to have
several tasks going at once, so that when you are not feeling particularly inspired by one aspect of the produc-
tion, you can switch to another for a while.
Your instinct may be to sit down with a pencil and pad of paper and start sketching away, and, in fact, that is
what you will do soon enough. First, though, there are some things to think about.
The design of a character should refl ect and support the theme of your story. For example, let's say that your
story is about a lonely monster who wanders the hills in search of the last mossy patch on which to rest its
aching bottom, and the theme is something like, “The things we need (i.e., a place to rest, companionship)
