To follow along with the next exercise, you first need to rate some Favorite clips for Cutting Dialogue-2. Drag a
selection range or set In and Out points at the times specified below; then rate these areas as Favorites:
Scene 11 Slate 20 Take 1: Between 00:00 (the start of the clip) and 02:08 and between 40:00 and 49:22
(the end of the clip)
Scene 11 Slate 21 Take 3: Between 02:18 and 20:11
Scene 11 Slate 22 Take 2: Between 00:00 (the start of the clip) and 06:16
Scene 11 Slate 23 Take 2: Between 07:10 and 10:01
Scene 11 Slate 23 Take 3: Between 13:19 and 27:21
Create another new Project and name it Cutting Dialogue-2.
Exploring the edit
Cutting dialogue scenes obviously require a good deal of audio manipulation to get the scene flowing smoothly.
The next exercise focuses on the various ways of working with audio in the Timeline and incorporates a lot
more L-cuts and J-cuts in the edit.
1. Set the Event Browser's Filter pop-up menu to All Clips and play Scene 11 Slate 19 Take 3 to view the
shot. Once again, we'll start by laying down the master shot to give us a foundation to work from; however,
this doesn't mean that every scene needs to start with a wide angle. By this stage of the story, the bedroom
location has been well established, so the viewers should have no trouble orientating themselves to where
the scene is taking place. The master is placed here first to provide a frame of reference to build the rest of
the coverage on. Select Scene 11 Slate 19 Take 3 in the Event Browser and press E to append the clip to the
Primary Storyline.
2. Most of the master shot that we've just added to the Timeline will be replaced with closer angles of the
action. In fact, the only time we'll cut to the master is when Katie walks over to the bed because we need to
be in a wider angle in order to see this action performed. Switch the Event Browser's filter pop-up menu to
Favorites, and play Scene 11 Slate 22 Take 2. This is a medium shot of Katie searching for evidence of a
disturbance and insisting that there is someone in the room playing tricks on her. The clip ends with Katie
