In-Depth Information
information can be acquired from a number of Web sites but normally for a
small fee. I was able to download a file in AutoCAD format.
I also referred to Microsoft Live Earth, which is similar to Google Earth but has
some very detailed bird's-eye views of many city centers. This was a useful
reference point throughout all stages that helped ensure buildings and
facades are as lifelike as possible.
Stage 4: Importing CAD Files
Goal : To successfully load accurate map data into SketchUp.
Input : AutoCAD file.
Tools : AutoCAD and SketchUp.
SketchUp will import .dwg and .dxf file formats. Importing of files for the
model was performed as follows:
• InAutoCAD,Iturnedoffunnecessarylayerssuchasdimensionsandspot
heights. Then I simplified the drawing to basic line information. I saved the
simplified drawing as a new CAD file with just one layer.
• OncetheimportedfilewasinSketchUp,Iclickedonthedrop-down
menu File, selected Import, and then selected file type under AutoCAD
files (*.dwg,*.dxf ). I selected my file and clicked on Options to make
sure the scale unit of the CAD file matched the unit of the SketchUp
model.
• First,IcheckedthesizeoftheimportedplanwiththeTapemeasuretool
to check if the scale is correct. As an example, consider door frame/car-
parking space. You can use the Tape measure tool to resize the model
