Context
The regeneration of a site near the Hunters Bar area of Sheffield is proposed.
The site currently comprises unkempt car parking and poor streetscape; but
it has the potential to be transformed into a superb haven of greenery inside
the city. The nearby pool hall, public houses and shops will make this a vibrant
and well-used space. This design aims to add interest, color, and life to the area
and to provide a space that rejuvenates the spirits of a visitor trying to escape
the daily struggle of city life . The design aspires to make this area an oasis of
tranquility in the center of the city.

Aims and Technique
The project required the development of an innovative design proposal
for regenerating an urban open space within the district of Hunters Bar in
Sheffield. Emphasis was to be placed on a design approach that interprets
elements of human experience in a spatial form; thus, a design language
responsive to the aspects of human psychological functioning related
particularly to orientation, place attachment, and neighborhood awareness
was proposed.
Even a small space, if it has extent, can constitute a whole different world.
A restorative environment permits the eye to focus on things that are invit-
ing and fascinating without requiring any special effort. In such a setting, the
mind wanders easily, absorbed by what the eye takes in and also by one's
thoughts. Such mental wanderings are more likely when the setting gives
the impression of having extent. Although the sense of extent is important,
