The Easter Egg Hen
ANDTHENTHEREAREGALSLIKEAMELIA, the Ameraucana. Of South Amer-
ican heritage from stock imported in the 1930s, this breed was developed mostly in
North America in the 1970s. Though new to the scene, Ameraucanas are rapidly rising
in popularity because these birds have quiet souls and quirky features. They coo like
doves and walk around your yard with slate or blue-green feet and puffed-out feathered
cheeks. They come in many gorgeous varieties of plumage, and as a bonus, they mix
up your egg basket's spectrum since they lay eggs in a variety of hues from light blue
to pink to green. This grand trick has earned them the nickname of the Easter Egg Hen.
I've had my share of Ameraucanas and always appreciate those pale jewels in the nest
box among the creams and browns of the other girls' eggs.
