Rhode Island Red
An American Classic
TILDA'S THE HARD-WORKING FARMHAND of the bunch and rightly so be-
cause these girls come from farm-bred stock. Unlike other breeds raised for looks, these
gals were bred to produce, produce, produce. Developed back in the 1800s for both egg
and meat production, these New England natives may not look as fancy as the other
gals, but they can lay like nobody's business. I like to think of Rhode Island Reds as the
Rosie the Riveters of the chicken world. Anyone who's had a few of these industrious
and independent birds would agree. She's also the only breed of chicken to receive the
honor of being a state bird! (I'll let you guess which state.)
