HONEY
Buff Orpington
Sassy Yet Docile
ORPINGTONS LIKE HONEY ARE A LARGE, ROUND TYPE OF HEN suited
for long, cold winters. These sassy, strong, bug-eating birds originated in the village of
Orpington in Kent, England, where they were bred to handle harsh weather, lay large
brown eggs, and assist the small producer in heavy meat production. Being a dual-pur-
pose fowl (suited for both meat and egg production), Orpingtons give the homesteader a
lot of bang for the buck.
Though Orps are one of the biggest birds in the laying world, their docile nature makes
them good with children, calm with grandparents, and patient with cats. These big
softies (literally - these birds have some of the softest, most beautiful golden plumage I
have ever had the luck to feel) will let you scoop them up and will eat out of the palm of
your hand. There's a reason so many folks love the Orp, and Honey is no exception.
