Creating a Named Parameter
Every dimension or feature value in Inventor is given a parameter name like d0,
d1, or d13405, but they can be hard to keep track of. In Chapter 3, “Learning the
Essentials of Part Modeling,” you learned that typing Width=100 would rename
the d0 dimension to Width while creating it. You can also edit these values after
the fact using the Parameters table. Later, when you create a tabled part, Inventor
searches for dimensions to which you gave special names and automatically
includes them in the table.
1. Make certain that the 2013 Essentials project file is active, and then
open c15-01.ipt from the Parts\Chapter15 folder.
2. Expand the Drawer Face feature in the Browser, and edit Sketch1,
which was consumed by the drawer face.
3. Locate the Dimension Display tool on the status bar. Click it and
switch the display to the Expression style.
This updates the sketch dimension to display the name and current
values, as shown in Figure 15.1. Note that the width is controlled by
d0 and the height by d1.
Parameter names
are case-sensitive
and cannot contain
spaces or use some
special characters.

of sketch dimensions.
4. Use Finish Sketch to go back to the solid model.
5. Click the Parameters tool on the Quick Access toolbar or the
Parameters panel of the Manage tab.
6. In the Parameters dialog box, click the cell under Model Parameters
for d0.
7. Type width for the new parameter name; then click the cell in the
Equation column that shows the current value of 18 in and change
it to 12 in.
