all the way into Washington. Probably the best part of the trip
occurs as the train winds its way through the New River Gorge
in West Virginia. About 25 minutes after leaving Montgomery,
West Virginia, you'll pass under the New River Gorge Bridge. It's
1,700 feet long and almost 900 feet above the river. The Cardinal
crosses the river more than once, but most of the time it will be on
the right side. This is a lovely ride any time of the year, especially
crossing the Blue Ridge Mountains, but it's really something if
you can manage to have your trip coincide with the fall colors.

You pretty much see it all on this trip: big cities and small towns,
industry and agriculture, temperate and tropical. The first part of
the southbound trip covers Amtrak's Northeast Corridor and is
the high-speed part of the run. Because they're so long, none of
the three Florida trains can reach the 125-mph speed of one of
the regional service trains, but you'll still be moving more than
100 mph en route to Washington. You'll see some important riv-
ers here. Actually, you go under the Hudson right after leaving
New York City, then over the Delaware, the Schuylkill, and the
Susquehanna. In between the industrialized areas, there are some
very pretty communities, particularly around Philadelphia, Wilm-
