Pennsylvanian (42, 43, 44)
Stops:
New York City, Philadelphia,
Harrisburg, Pittsburgh
Frequency:
Daily
Distance:
444 miles
Duration:
9¼ hours
Equipment:
Amfleet coaches, business class coach,
cafe car
This is really one of the more scenic trips among the eastern
trains. The Pennsylvanian passes through the some beautiful
countryside, including Pennsylvania Dutch farmlands, and does
so during daylight hours in both directions. A highlight of this
trip, especially for rail fans, is the famous horseshoe curve near
Altoona, Pennsylvania. For the best look at it, be on the left side
of the train if you're heading west and have your camera ready.
Cardinal (50, 51)
Stops:
New York, Philadelphia, Washington,
White Sulphur Springs, Cincinnati,
Indianapolis, Chicago
Frequency:
Departs from New York Sunday,
Wednesday, Friday; departs from
Chicago Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday
Distance:
1,147 miles
Duration:
27¾ hours
Equipment:
Amfleet coaches, Viewliner sleepers,
diner/lounge car
The Cardinal is one of my favorite trips in either direction, but
personally I'd give an edge to the eastbound trip. It will be dark
or close to it when you leave Chicago, but the real scenery hap-
pens the next day almost from the moment you wake up and lasts
