In-Depth Information
This is an advantage for many applications, and epoxides are widely used in
microelectronic applications. The structure of the cured resin is highly polar
and can form hydrogen bonds. This makes the cured resin an excellent adhe-
sive.
QUESTIONS
1. Which of the following polymers do not depend upon ethylene (or a
derivative of ethylene) as a raw material (select all that apply; could be
any number from 0 to 5 choices)?
a. polystyrene
b. PVC
c. polyethylene terephthalate
d. nylon 4,6
e. polybutylene terephthalate
2. Dimethyl terephthalate has two major advantages over terephthalic acid.
What are they?
3. Draw the starting monomer or monomers to make nylon 4,6.
4. Write the structure for polycarbonate
5. Which of the following polymers are addition polymers (select all that
apply; could be any number from 0 to 5 choices)?
a. polystyrene
b. PVC
c. polyethylene terephthalate
d. nylon 4,6
e. polybutylene terephthalate
6. If dimethylterephthalate costs 45.0¢ per pound, 1,4-butanediol costs
60.0¢ per pound, and the price of the catalyst is negligible, assuming
100% yield, calculate the raw material cost of polybutylene terephthalate
to the nearest tenth of a cent.
7. Draw the starting monomer or monomers to make nylon 6,10.
8. Start with chemicals directly obtained from petroleum and show the
sequence of steps (don't need to show mechanism; but show major
isolated intermediate chemicals) to make PET.
9. Assume that the amount of base and N-acetyl caprolactam used is so
small that it is insignificant in the weight of the polymer and in the cost.
