Japanese umbrellas—perfect examples of simplicity and beauty, yet they are
complex in their design. The wagasa serve as a subtle reminder that we can learn a
lot from studying the richness of Japanese culture, especially its culture of art and
refinement. All you need to do is open your mind and think a little differently. The
more high tech we become, it seems the more the past has to teach us about the
fundamentals of design—and of life. It's important to preserve those fundamentals.
The precision of the final rib structure and the gluedon washi paper work together to fold away simply and
elegantly. Wagasa are usually stored handle down.
Nishibori-san explains that to create the ribs of Japanese umbrellas, craftspeople split bamboo into very
thin strips.
The Hiyoshiya shop is located in the Kamigyoku district of Kyoto. See their Web site in both English and
Japanese: www.wagasa.com
