THE PIERPONT INN
& RACQUET CLUB
. ,
Back in 1910, enthusiasts were traveling up and down the California coast in that new fangled
invention, the automobile. The Historic Pierpont Inn was built that year, in part to accommodate
the growing number of people who were between destinations. Weary travelers required a comfort-
able place to rest and recharge their own personal batteries with a home-cooked meal. Josephine
Pierpont saw the need and rose to the challenge. She commissioned the famous architect of the day,
Sumner P. Hunt, to design a Craftsman-style bungalow inn. This form of construction was inspired
by the Arts and Crafts Movement, which began in the 1880s. It celebrated handicrafts and encour-
aged the use of simple forms and natural materials. The name craftsman is actually taken from the
magazine where the famous furniture designer, Gustav Stickley, offered floor plans in the early
1900s. It soon came to mean any dwelling that expressed arts and crafts ideals, most especially the
simple, economical, and extremely popular bungalow.
The Pierpont Inn encompasses decades of rich architecture featuring two 1925 English Tudor
Revival cottages, a 1935 Spanish-Revival banquet center, and a mid-century-modern retreat known
as The 50's Flat. The romantic coastal charm of the property has made the Pierpont Inn a favorite
location for weddings and receptions, family reunions, corporate retreats, and splendid overnight
getaways for more than 95 years.
