ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Torben Lenau is associate professor of design
methodology, material selection, and bio-
mimetics in the Department of Mechanical
Engineering, Technical University of Denmark.
His research interests are creative methods in
product design with focus on materials,
manufacturing, and biomimetics (inspiration
from nature). He has conducted several
industrial case studies on how to integrate
biomimetics in product development and has
developed biocards used to communicate
design principles found in nature. Furthermore,
he studies naturally occurring photonic
structures in order to develop new surface
coatings based on structural colors.
Thomas Hesselberg is a research associate in the
Department of Zoology, University of Oxford,
United Kingdom. His research interests include
animal behavior, spider web building,
comparative biomechanics, and biomimetics. He
holds a PhD in biomimetics from the University
of Bath and has been involved in several
biomimetic projects, including the development
of robotic endoscopes based on ragworm
locomotion and morphology, and the study of
insect
flight-control
strategies
and
their
application to micro-air vehicles.
