For MRI/optical probes, incorporating high payload magnetic
centers for detection is more desirable due to the relatively low
sensitivity of current clinical MRI. Therefore, the same group
increased

-chelated dye-doped silica
nanoparticles using layer-by-layer polyelectrolyte deposition
method [62]. The Gd-DOTA (DOTA = 1,4,7,10-Teraazactckididecabe-
1,4,7,10-Tetraacetic acid) complex was deposited on the Gd-Si-
DTTA (Gd-(siloxylpropyl)diethylenetriamine tetraacetate (Gd-
DTTA))-modified silica nanoparticle via the electrostatic interaction
between the positively charged complex and the negatively
charged polystyrenesulfonate (PSS) group (Fig. 5.6(1)). The

values per particle were increased proportionally with the
increased number of layers (Fig 5.6(2a, 2b)). This indicated that
water molecules could readily access the Gd centers, thus allowing
efficient water proton relaxivity. The

imaging of cancer-
specific magnetic-fluorescent nanoparticles was also demonstrated
by the noncovalent functionalized positive peptides via electrostatic
interaction (Fig 5.6(2c-2i)).
