II. Softprooi ng
Softprooi ng is a technique used to simulate on your monitor what your
image will look like when it is printed, before actually printing the image.
Softprooi ng will show you potential shifts in color, contrast and tonality
that will result from the printer, paper, ink and proi le combinations chosen
for output. I call this the “reality checker” because it can show you a great
deal about the dif erences you will see as the image is translated from the
illuminated monitor to various papers with individual proi le settings. In the
long run this feature can save you lots of money in ink and paper because
you are instantly able to see changes that may disappoint you in comparison
to what you are seeing on the monitor, and af ord you the opportunity to go
back to your digital darkroom and make modii cations to the image based on
the softprooi ng previews.
Photoshop of ers a softprooi ng feature in the Print dialog window with
Match Print colors and show Paper White checkboxes, or simulate a full-screen
softproof under the View menu in Photoshop.
