Collaborating with Civil 3d
A common workflow when using InfraWorks is to export a preliminary design
done in InfraWorks and hand it over to a Civil 3D user for a more refined design.
Transferring data between InfraWorks and Civil 3D is actually quite simple—you
just use IMX to exchange data between the two programs.
To export an IMX file out of InfraWorks, first click the Settings And Utilities
icon on the main toolbar and then click the Export IMX icon on the Settings
And Utilities toolbar. This will open the Export To IMX dialog (see Figure 8.20).

fIgure 8.20 Exporting to IMX
In the Export To IMX dialog, you will want to define the extent of your export.
You can use the entire model for the extent of your export, but that might create
an overly large or unmanageable file. It is suggested practice to limit the extent
to only what you need. This can be done by polygon, by bounding box, or by load-
ing the extent from a file such as a ground image source file or one of your other
data sources. You can also define a target coordinate system for your export and
set the path and filename where it will be saved to. Once you have made all these
choices, you simply click Export, and the file will be saved. You can then deliver
the resulting IMX file to the person who plans to use it in Civil 3D.
