exercise 7.2: Analyze Your Model Visually
In this scenario, let's imagine you've been told that the industrial park must
not be visible from the town's most prestigious hotel, known for its view of the
surrounding mountains. In this exercise, you will set your viewpoint to the top
floor of the hotel and use the Select Visible and Range Finder tools to analyze
what you see. You'll then make some adjustments to the design to meet your
visibility requirement.
If you are continuing from the previous exercise, you can skip to step 3.
Otherwise, if you haven't already done so, go to the topic's web page at www
.sybex.com/go/infraworksessentials and download the files for Chapter 7.
Unzip the files to the correct location on your hard drive according to the
instructions in the introduction.
1. If it is not already open, launch InfraWorks.
2. On the Start Page, click Open and browse to C:\InfraWorks Essentials\
Chapter 07\ . Click Ch07 Bimsville Bypass.sqlite and click Open.
3. In the top-right of your screen, click the Proposals drop-down list
and select Ex_7_2.
In this proposal, the coverage representing the town limits has
been removed so that the visibility analysis is a little clearer.
4. Restore the Hotel Window bookmark.
This bookmark simulates the view of a person looking out from
one of the hotel rooms on the top floor.
5. If the InfraWorks toolbar is not visible, click the InfraWorks Home icon.
6. If the Analyze toolbar is not visible, click the Analyze icon on the
InfraWorks toolbar.
7. On the Analyze toolbar, click Select Visible.
A number of items in the foreground will be highlighted in gold,
indicating that they are visible from the current viewpoint. If you
look closely, you will see the top of a building just beyond the hilltop
near the center of your view.
8. Click Range Finder on the side toolbar.
