Corpus Cristi , celebrated on the ninth Thursday after Easter, is a
hybrid religious festival/harvest celebration.
June 24 - Saint John the Baptist , known locally as Inti Raymi. An-
other example of the Spanish Roman Catholic Church blanketing
their religion over an indigenous celebration, in this case that of the
sun and summer solstice. The Northern Highlands are particularly
festive during this time, especially Otavalo.
June 28-29 - Saints Peter and Paul .
July 24 - Simón Bolívar's Birthday . A public holiday with country-
wide festivities celebrating El Libertador.
July 25 - Founder's Day , Guayaquil. A continuation of the previous
day and Guayaquil's biggest party.
August
August 10 - Quito Independence Day , Día de la Independencia - a
public holiday.
September
Throughout the Sierras, various festivals take place to commemorate
the fall harvest.
September 1-15 - Fiesta del Yamor in Otavalo. This is Otavalo's
main fiesta, with dancing, music and drinking, during the solar equi-
nox, in which the Pachamama , or Mother Earth, is honored in prepa-
ration for the planting of new corn.

October 9 - Guayaquil Independence Day . Another excuse to have
a public holiday and party big in Guayaquil for several days in con-
junction with Columbus Day.
October 12 - Columbus Day , Día de la Raza (Day of the Race). Yet
another public holiday.
