Carnival . The last days before AshWednesday and just before Lent,
Carnival is the ultimate partying indulgence in Catholic Latin Amer-
ica, with Ecuador as no exception. Parades, waterfights and packed
beaches are common during this time. Ambato, especially, is known
for its Fiesta de las Frutas y las Flores , or Festival of Fruit and
Flowers parade. Baños, as well, affords a great time if you don't mind
getting “foamed” and drenched by hoards of children. In fact, most
places will have a festive atmosphere. Although the actual dates
change each year according to the religious calendar, Carnival cele-
brations always occur the weekend prior to Ash Wednesday.
Easter and Holy Week , Semana Santa. Parades, religious proces-
sions, and again, packed beaches, mark the festivities throughout the
week of Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday
and Easter Sunday. Many shops and merchants close during a good
portion of the festivities.
