Baeza Area
San Rafael Lodge , contact through Hotel Quito, in
Quito, Av. Gonzalez Suarez 25-00, or Casilla, 17-01-2201,
/fax 2-2567-284, is a desti-
nation for birders and those visiting San Rafael Falls,
along the eastern Cordillera and near the town of Baeza. It's particu-
larly popular with birding groups. Simple, but comfortable, it is a nice
place to rest between the highlands and the Oriente.

In the northern Oriente, accommodations and camping are offered in
conjunction with organized tours and typically include guide ser-
vices, meals, transportation from Coca or Lago Agrio, etc. The only
towns you might spend any time in are Lago Agrio or Coca, and, if
you're lucky, that won't be for very long.
Lago Agrio
This offers plenty of budget accommodations. Poke around for the lat-
est developments (which are occurring rapidly), as places in this re-
gion tend to vary in quality over time. There really aren't any great
options in the town itself. Try the clean and modern, but somewhat
noisy, Hostal El Cofán , Av. Quito and 12 de Febrero,
6-830-009.
Rooms include private baths, fans or air-conditioning, and, in some
cases, TVs. Remember, you are not staying here for the ambiance. $
Just outside of town, about a mile west on the main road from Quito,
is Hostal Grán Lago ,
