allows an escape from the boomtown's bustle in the only good hotel in
town. Air-conditioned rooms complement a quiet and clean atmo-
sphere, a decent restaurant, and a bar. $
The only other acceptable places in town are the budget-oriented
Ho-
tel Oasis
, also on the riverfront near La Misión,

Hotel El Auca
, in the center of town,
6-880-127. The Auca is popu-
lar with budget travelers and recommended as being comfortable. It
has cabins with private hot-water baths, a patio garden and knowl-
edgeable and friendly owners. $
“Auca” is the Quichuaword for “savages,” and is
used by the Quichua to refer to the Huaorani
ethnic group. Needless to say, this is a direct
insult to the Huaorani. In their language,
Huaorani means “the people,” a name they
obviously prefer.
Cuyabeno Region: Ecolodges,
Riverboats & Camps
Cuyabeno River Lodge
, operated by Nuevo Mundo Travel and
Tours, is a top-quality ecolodge along the Río Cuyabeno. From Lago
Agrio, a short journey to the lodge provides quick access to the west-
ern stretches of the reserve. Here, most of the exploring is done in ca-
noes around the shallow lakes that surround the ecolodge. This
unique habitat is well removed from the other projects on Río
Aguarico. It provides opportunities for spectacular wildlife viewing,
as well as the chance to venture farther out with a tent-based camp on
the shoreline of one of the lakes. Back at the lodge, relax in complete
comfort in native-style cabins. Natural materials, cozy rooms, with
private baths and water at nature's temperature - overall, this is a
very professional outfit, with an emphasis on natural history and en-
vironmental sensitivity. $$$$, all-inclusive.
