Despite its name, this intimate venue hosts everything
from folk-rock and world music to a cappella, as well
as modern dance. Overlooking the auditorium (which
holds about 450 people) is a small balcony with a
bar - the best vantage point from which to enjoy
bands that are normally found playing bigger venues.

Built in 1852, this spectacular, polygonal circus ring witnessed the birth
of the trapeze when Jules Léotard appeared here almost 150 years ago.
Each winter, the Bouglione family devise a new, enthralling show that
features trapeze artists, clowns, magicians, contortionists and animal
acts from around the world. And every year (Jan-Feb), the venue hosts
an international festival featuring the circus stars of tomorrow.
Cartoucherie de Vincennes radical theatre
Route du Champ de Manœuvre, Bois de Vincennes, 12ème
Q Château de Vincennes with free shuttle bus
This complex of five small theatres and three work-
shops was converted from a disused munitions factory
in the 1970s. The site is off the beaten track and best
reached by taxi, but it's worth the trek as the theatres'
repertoires are prolific and stimulating.
Founded after the riots of 1968, the Théâtre du Soleil
was the first to establish itself here and, under the
direction of Arian Mnouchkine, is still turning out polit-
ical epics. Philippe Adrien's energetic troupe stages a
mix of the avant-garde and the classical at the Théâtre
de la Têmpète, while Julie Brochen at the Théâtre de
l'Aquarium programmes imaginative productions of
Chekhov and Tolstoy alongside music-accompanied
poetry and Japanese butô dance. The Théâtre du
Chaudron favours young companies, often with women
directors, while the Théâtre de l'Epée de Bois is known
for its progressive take on contemporary works.
