Eglise de la Madeleine Classical church

Modelled on a Greek temple, the Madeleine church
took almost 100 years to build. It was variously
intended to be a stock exchange, a tribute to
Napoleonic glory and a railway station before it was
consecrated as a church in 1842. The magnificent
marble-and-gilt interior features three stunning domes.

Eglise St-Augustin high-rise church

Built in 1860-71, this was the city's first church to
incorporate a metal frame, allowing its dome to rise
to 50 m (164 ft). Architect Victor Baltard filled the
triangular site by placing progressively larger chapels
along the nave. The painted ceilings are the work of
Classicist artist William Bougereau.

This museum of sartorial style has a vast collection of
clothing, accessories and photos with which to stage
temporary exhibitions for followers of fashion. Shows
range from displays of 18th-century waistcoats to the
glitzy wardrobe of Marlene Dietrich. The museum is
