At the age of 15, Dina Vierny became the chief model
and creative muse of French sculptor Aristide Maillol
(1861-1944). Her subsequent collection of his work -
and that of his friends and contemporaries - is show-
cased in this grand hôtel particulier . Maillol's larger-
than-life marble sculptures dominate the entrance hall,
while his early years are well represented in rooms
dedicated to his drawings, Nabi-influenced paintings
and intricate tapestries. Other 20th-century artists
featured include Gauguin, a major influence on
Maillol, Pierre Bonnard and Maurice Denis (see p106) .
Works by Picasso, Degas, Cézanne and Odilon Redon
are illuminated in darkened drawing rooms, while
conceptual art gets a look in with Marcel Duchamp's
famed “Ready-Made” art. Note that the frequent
temporary exhibitions can attract long queues. Adm

Along with artists Jean Cocteau and Henri Matisse,
sculptor Auguste Rodin rented rooms in this hôtel
particulier in 1908. Smitten with the state-owned pro-
perty, he donated all his work, personal archives and
belongings to the government in exchange for the
foundation of a museum here. Inside, the huge bronze
and marble sculptures include his famed Kiss and the
headless Walking Man , as well as a number of works
by Rodin's student and lover Camille Claudel. There
are also paintings by Monet, Renoir and van Gogh from
the artist's private collection, and furniture from his
house in Meudon. The museum's real charm, however,
lies outside in the spacious gardens, where The
Thinker is framed by the gold-domed Invalides. Nearby
are the triumphant Burghers of Calais and a masterful
monument to Balzac. One of Paris's real gems. Adm
