Image Capture
While on the topic of free utilities, I think it's worth mentioning the Image
Capture application that ships with Mac OS X. This application is intended
as a quick and easy means to download images from digital cameras.
What makes it somewhat noteworthy in the context of color manage-
ment is that a user can apply input profiles to untagged documents as
seen in the dialog in Fig. 8-10. If you are working with a TIFF or JPEG
image without embedded profiles or the incorrect EXIF data, Image
Capture can be a quick way to download the images and apply an input
profile at the same time. Of course, you can also use the Embed specific
profile AppleScript mentioned earlier.
An interesting side note is that Image Capture can display RAW files,
at least those from my Canon 300D (see Fig. 8-10). However, when the
images are selected and saved to disk, they remain in a RAW format.
Fig. 8-10 This is the
dialog from ImageCapture,
where I can embed color
profiles into all the images
from my EOS 300D
camera. This is a fast and
effective way of actually
embedding an ICC profile
instead of relying on EXIF
data.
