In-Depth Information
Image Capture runs under Mac OS X. Users can also use Image Capture
to invoke AppleScripts to handle work flow. For example, I have a script
that embeds basic IPTC/XMP data into my images, then moves them to
a specific location on my hard drive, based upon date. Image Capture will
also allow users to control and share devices: I can hook up my camera
and share the memory card's content over the Web. I can also control
the shutter and downloading of images over the Web. Very useful for
remote monitoring in situations where a human presence is detrimental.
Chromix ColorThink
One of the most useful commercial third-party color management utili-
ties is ColorThink . This is especially true for our friends running the
Windows operating system, since some of the functionality found in the
free Apple ColorSync utilities are found in ColorThink. ColorThink pro-
vides functionality such as a profile first aid called Profile Medic , a very
robust profile inspector, and more. Just because you have the ColorSync
Utility don't think that ColorThink isn't a very necessary product. In addi-
tion to the items listed, ColorThink has a feature called Profile Manager ,
which allows users to create sets of profiles for better organization. When
you begin to install hundreds of profiles on your computer, this ability
to show and hide sets of profiles based upon the task at hand is very
useful. The manager displays all profiles or allows you to filter what's
shown in its list; profiles based on profile type, by location on the system,
and so forth. This list can display the profiles by their internal or exter-
nal profile name.
The list view seen in Fig. 8-11 displays a great deal of useful infor-
mation about the profiles the Profile Manager has found on a system.
Double-click a profile and the inspector window appears and provides a
lot of information about the internal anatomy of the profile, such as the
media white and black values as well as the number of nodes (table size).
Standard and private tags can be seen by clicking the Tag Table pane.
ColorThink allows users to modify profiles in such useful areas as
changing the preferred rendering intent, renaming the internal profile
name, and even allowing the preferred CMM to be reset. The Curves pane
shows the curves of the profile for each rendering intent, which can be
a useful way to examine the gray balance of an output profile. Color-
Think allows users to make Device Links as well. Though not as robust
as the options seen with some of the full-featured profile products dis-
cussed in Chapter 7, this is the least expensive product I know that pro-
vides this feature. ColorThink creates what are known as Color Sets by
importing measured data files from a number of packages including those
from GretagMacbeth, Monaco, and others. A user can open an image and
create a color list from the image data. By importing these data files into
a color list, you can view the LAB colors or view the data in other color
models and even plot the lists using the 3D gamut mapping (see later).
