profile portion of the package produces RGB, CMYK, and up to eight
color channel profiles. Profiler also allows both prelinearization and
postlinearization options. The software wisely advises users producing
RGB output profiles not to use linearization if the profiles are to be used
for devices that use CMYK inks or toners. A prelinearization target can
contain from 5 to 40 steps. Profiler supports a large number of Spec-
trophotometers and targets range in size from 343 to nearly 3000 patches
depending on the color model (RGB or CMYK), and even more for
multichannel profiles. Advanced options allow a user to alter the ink limit
for patch output and the ability to produce scrambled printer targets. The
software can generate and print all targets directly in the application or
save them as TIFF files.
Averaging of data files can be conducted within the application. Users
have four options for Table Resolution (profile size and number of nodes)
ranging from 9 ¥ 9 ¥ 9 or 729 nodes, to 33 ¥ 33 ¥ 33 or 35937 nodes in
either 8-bit or 16-bit. CMYK options for black generation, total ink, UCR,
and GCR are quite robust (see Chapter 7). There are a series of sliders for
controlling saturation and contrast to tweak the Perceptual tables in
output profiles and a neutralize gray axis slider to account for paper
purity (tint). Profiler is a wizard-based product, making it an easy and
intuitive product while still having a great deal of advanced profile build-
ing options, including a profile editor (see later). Profiler supports
a number of Spectrophotometers, including all the X-Rite products
(DTP-41, DTP-70, etc.), the Spectroscan, Spectrolino/Spectroscan, and
Eye-One Pro.
GretagMacbeth ProfileMaker Pro
ProfileMaker Pro 5.0 is a high-end profiling suite of modules that can
create display, scanner, digital camera, and output profiles and Device
Links (Device Links are discussed in detail in Chapter 7). The output
portion of the package can create RGB, CMYK, and multicolor profiles
with up to 10 channels. Postlinearization of output profiles is supported
within the ProfileEditor module. The MeasureTool module has a test
chart generator that can produce virtually any number of patches in a
number of configurations ranging from approximately 200 to as many as
25,000 depending on the color model (RGB and CMYK), and even higher
for multichannel profiles.
The test chart generator produces a TIFF or PDF document for output
along with a matching reference file necessary for measuring a target.
Users can measure targets in either the MeasureTool module or the
ProfileMaker Pro module. Advanced options include optical brightener
detection, two options for handling and accounting for paper white (tint),
and three options for increased gamut tweaks in the output profile. Spe-
cific illuminants can be built into the resulting printer profiles rather than
