the 1970s and still stands at 1.4 billion. A revival of the development
of wind systems for rural areas is likely to be much more successful
than in the seventies as technical innovations in power electronics,
materials, design methods have made enormous progress. This
will create the possibility to realise extremely reliable small and
medium wind power systems for both stand alone and grid-
connected applications. The only missing ingredient is capital.
My sincere hope is that we have to draw a third line in the right
corner of Fig. 2.5, indicating the (re)emergence of wind systems for
those 1.4 billion people who are kept from access to electricity.
