is the scientific
director of the We@Sea Foundation, which
carried out R&D on the application of wind
energy plants ofshore. From 1989 to 2005, he
was head of the Renewable Energy Unit and the
Wind Energy Unit of the Energy Research Centre
of the Netherlands (ECN), and he is still attached
to ECNs wind energy unit as a senior scientist.
Dr Beurskens is member of the board of trustees of the
Windunie, a co-operative enterprise of Dutch farmers operating
about 440 MW of wind power on a private basis. He was the
technical and scientific advisor to the European Wind Energy
Association (EWEA) and was a member of the scientific advisory
board of the former Institute for Solar Energy Technology (ISET)
of Kassel, Germany (at present part of the Fraunhofer
Gesellschaft). He is chairman of the scientific advisory board of For
Wind (joint wind energy research institute of the universities of
Oldenburg, Bremen and Hannover, Germany) and a member of
the Scientific Advisory Council of the Hanse Wissenschaftskolleg,
Delmenhorst, Germany. Dr Beurskens was recently reappointed
to serve on the Steering Committee of the European Wind Energy
Technology Platform and act as the chairman of WG 2 (Wind
Power Systems). He received the honour of Wind Energy
Pioneer of the British Wind Energy Association. In 2008 he was
awarded the Poul la Cour's prize, which was presented to him by
Mr Janez Potočnik, EU commissioner for Science and Research.
In November 2009, Dr Beurskens received a honorary doctorate
degree at the University of Oldenburg, Germany, for his work on
initiating European research in the field of wind energy.
Throughout his career, Dr Beurskens has been extensively
involved with various industry associations and policy groups
involved in renewable energy, particularly those active at the
European level. He was a founding member of the Netherlands
Wind Energy Association (NWEA, former NEWIN) and the European
Wind Energy Association (EWEA) and currently serves them as
a board member. He was one of the founders of the International
Meeting of Test Stations (IMTS) and the European Academy of
Wind Energy (EAWE). Dr Beurskens represented ECN at the
