With my new affiliation in the middle of Europe, Luxembourg's
Interdisciplinary Centre immediately after its foundation became
member of the Distributed Energy Resources Laboratory Network
of Europe (DERLab). Still and again, integration of the new
sustainable energy technologies is remaining the major challenge.
Based on flexible grid-coupling through power electronics, it is
the micro-electronics and data-processing technology that has to
match the emerging distributed medium and low-voltage active-
grid structures on the way to full solar supply, with more and more
European communities being committed to follow this path as
soon as possible.
On the ground of secured communication structures, methods
for maintained reliability, extended protection and best usage
of power lines are developed. Robust distributed optimisation
of generation, storage and consumption dynamics are the
measures to reduce vulnerability and optimise technoeconomics.
The transition to such active-grids is expected to reach major
