as mechanical brakes, we were convinced that the safety issue had
been solved. Consequently we worked together on the develop-
ment of a production version of the wind turbine. Fundamental
principles of the construction from the prototype were maintained,
and the wind turbine appeared as a kind of an “archetype” of what
for a long time remained the epitome of a modern Danish wind
turbine—a 3-bladed rotor with air brakes, electric yaw steered
by a wind vane, and two speed operation with generators directly
connected to the grid.

From Herborg to Vestas
The first production wind turbine was erected at Gunhardt
Keseler's farm in Dejbjerg near Skjern. Here I had an unfortunate
flirtation with fate that left me somewhat shaken. At that time, in
1979, it was not ordinary among pioneers to use personal safety
gear such as safety harnesses. We were not protected in any
manner during the erection and operation of the wind turbine
in Dejbjerg. At a certain stage of installation I was standing at
the top of the tower on the platform, mounting the belt that
would connect the small generator to the big generator. While
