Of course, the natural colorist to take on this image is Chris Pepper-
man, who was a colorist at NFL Films when I sat down with him to grade
this shot. Pepperman starts with primaries. “I want to make everything
black and white.” (The primary correction is simply pulling all of the satu-
ration out.) He pulls an HSL key in secondaries, qualifying warm tones.
Then he cranks the contrast, crushing the blacks.
I always want to push the limit and then come back, because I want
to know what my range is.
