On a methodological level [BEL 06], data were gathered on an open road from a
group of 10 experienced drivers (five men and five women, with an average age of
39). First of all, the drivers were asked to carry out one of the two predefined
experimental routes (one of 60 km and the other of 180 km) at the wheel of an
instrumented vehicle. Their activity, as well as the road environment, was then
recorded on video. At the end of the driving phase, the situations when a collision
risk occurred, even if very small (112 cases collected for a total of 1,200 km
covered), were then the subject of individual debriefing interviews based on the
technique of self-confrontation: the drivers watch the film of their own activity in
situ , then the experimenter asks them to clarify their actions, decisions, reasoning,
etc. The benefit of using the self-confrontation method lies in the possibility of
accessing information that is not directly observable, such as the way in which the
drivers mentally represent a situation to themselves [BEL 07a], [BEL 09], assesses
the criticality [BAN 08] or make a particular decision in view of managing risks.
Figure 5.2 gives an example of data collected during this experiment.
