Grunewaldturm
Fantastic views can be had
from the red Neo-Gothic brick
tower, built in 1897 as a memori-
al to Kaiser Wilhelm I. It now

Blockhaus Nikolskoe
The log cabin, built in1819,
was a present from King Fried-
rich Wilhelm III to his daughter
Charlotte and his son-in-law,
future Tsar Nicholas I. The wood-
en Russian-style dacha was
restored after a fire in 1985.

Onkel-Tom-Siedlung
The “Uncle Tom's Hut” set-
tlement, developed in 1926-32
according to designs by Bruno
Taut and others, was intended to
create a modern housing estate
for workers, unlike their old nar-
row, dark tenement blocks.

Tomb
The German playwright Kleist
and his companion Henriette
Vogel committed suicide by
shooting themselves in 1811;
they are buried here together
(near the S-Bahn overpass).

university, founded in 1948 as a
rival to East-Berlin Humboldt
University, covers large parts of
Dahlem. It is worth looking at
the 1950s Henry-Ford-Bau and
the so-called Rostlaube (rusting
hut), at present being redesigned

St-Annen-Kirche
The 14th-century Gothic
church is a typical Berlin country
church. Attractive murals depict
scenes from the life of Saint
Anna. Also on display are 11
late-Gothic figures of saints and

Teufelsberg
Both the hill and the lake,
the dark green Teufelssee, are
popular destinations for a day
out at the weekend, for flying
kites, biking and sunbathing.

The main shopping street
