for keyframes will allow the animator to make the required adjustments to
timing, slowing the movement down or speeding it up. In this way sequential
images of a chosen subject may be useful in creating animation of a subject
that might be different from the one in the reference material, substituting
one figure for another. A running male figure could provide key information
for a running woman, for example. Obviously there are limits to the ways
in which reference materials can be of use to the animator, though I have
seen students successfully using footage of themselves as reference for the
animation of a dog—and it worked!
The rate at which technology advances makes discussion of the relative merits
and qualities of individual pieces of photographic equipment somewhat
irrelevant in this text. So here we deal only with the principles of capturing
