The short-term components (10-100 000 years) of the carbon cycle are largely driven by
fluctuations in biological activity and are affected by human activities such as coal and oil
burning, land use, and deforestation. Although this aspect will be left to more specialized
monographs and textbooks, we leave it as an exercise to describe a simplified version of
this cycle.
