Figure 5.11. Statistical significant interaction effects of operational parameters onproduct yield
or product qualityperformanceduring thegrowth (a, b) and inductionphase (c). Note: Thedotted
and solid lines represent the lowandhighvalue, respectively, of theoperational parameter shown
on the right axis. Performance parameter values are shown on the left axis as a function of the
operational parameter shown above or below the individual graphs. Data have been normalized
against theaverage small-scalemodel performanceat set point operatingconditions. The symbols

indicate the low and high end of the characterization range, respectively.
mentioned earlier, the worst case combination of operational parameters resulted in
acceptable product quality when processed through the process. Thus, none of the
operational parameters was identified as critical. Table 5.5 presents a list of the key
operational parameters that were identified. Temperature, Feed-1, and pH during growth
phase and dissolved oxygen, Feed-2, and pH during induction phase were identified as
key operational parameters. Table 5.5 also shows the acceptable ranges for each of these
parameters. Together these acceptable ranges define the process design space.
