In-Depth Information
By looking at the grid sections on your mock-up, you can see that the images on the right are approxim-
ately 225 pixels wide by 150 pixels high.
If you have Photoshop Extended, you can select an area in your image, choose Window > Meas-
urement, and then click the Record Measurements button to see the pixel dimensions of your se-
lection. This is a helpful feature when trying to rebuild from existing compositions.
You will now optimize this image to fit the allotted space. First, you'll check the file size of this image.
1 Return to the advps1001.psd file and select Image > Image Size. The Image Size dialog box appears.
2 If the unit of measurement is not set to pixels, change the measurement to pixels. The size indicates
that this file is 786 pixels wide by 567 pixels high.
The Image Size dialog box.
On-screen images cannot accommodate more dots per inch in the same space; they occupy space on
the monitor based on their pixel count. This particular image would use about 90 percent of a browser
window as calculated from the pixel dimensions, not from the resolution. In the following steps, you
will only consider pixel dimensions.
3 After looking at the pixel information in the Image Size dialog box, click Cancel. Since you must de-
termine a specific width and height, you will use the Crop tool.
4 Click the Crop tool ( ) to select it in the Tools panel.
5 In the Options bar select W x H x Resolution from the Select a preset aspect ratio or crop size. Type
225px in the Width text field and 150px in the Height text field. Note that entering a pixel value for
resolution is unnecessary as the size is determined by your pixel values for Width and Height.
Fix the crop size.
6 With the Crop tool still selected, click and drag to select the area you want to include in the final im-
age; no exact area is necessary for this lesson. Notice that you cannot control the proportions of your
crop; you are forced to use the same proportions as the pixel amounts you entered.
