mask overwrites itself each time. Note that you have created the gradient on the mask, not on the actu-
al shape.
Pressing and holding the Shift key constrains the gradient to a straight path.
Click and drag the gradient from the right side of the rectangle shape to the left. The gradient is added to
the mask.
You will now turn off the visibility of this shape layer so you can focus on the text that you'll add to
this image.
4 Click the visibility eye icon to the left of the Rectangle 1 layer.
5 Choose File > Save. Keep the file open for the next part of the lesson.
Adding vector text
Text that you create in Photoshop is vector type, and depending upon how you save the file, it will re-
main in the vector state. The following formats will keep your text as vector when saved:
Photoshop
EPS
PDF
If you choose to save in another format (for example, TIF), your vector text will rasterize. To rasterize
means that the vector data, such as vector shapes and text, convert to pixels. The resolution of your ras-
terized text depends on the resolution of the image.
A vector image is mathematically created and is scalable. The rasterized text is pixelated and cannot scale
successfully.
1 With the advps0901_work file still open, select the background layer in the Layers panel, and then se-
lect the Type tool ( ). The available options change in the Options bar at the top.
