Adjusting the lighting
You can use the settings in the top half of the Properties panel to take control of lighting a subject. For
example, you can control the color of light by clicking the white swatch, as well as adjust the intensity.
This is similar to putting a filter or gel on a light and adjusting the brightness of the bulb. You can also
adjust the Hotspot (inner oval on the image) to control the range of lighting.
You can use the settings in the lower half of the Properties panel (divided by a barely visible line above
Colorize) to adjust these options for the entire set of lights:
Colorize : controls the tint of the overall lighting. You can click the swatch to change the color.
Exposure : controls highlight and shadow detail.
Gloss : determines how much surfaces reflect light.
Metallic : determines which is more reflective: the light or the object on which the light is cast.
Ambience : diffuses the light as if it were combined with other light in a room, such as sunlight or fluor-
escent light. Choose a value of 100 to use only the light source, or a value of -100 to remove the light
source.
Texture : applies a texture channel that lets you control lighting effects using grayscale images (called
bump maps) to simulate 3D.
The Lighting Effects filter works with 8-bit RGB images ONLY, and requires a supported video
card.
Adding sunlight effects
Now you will adjust the light of the flowers so the image looks as though light is leaking down from the
forest canopy on to the flowers.
1 Increase the Spot light intensity to about 42 in the Properties panel and enlarge the Hotspot to around
90 by dragging the sliders.
2 Adjust the ellipse dimensions by dragging the appropriate adjustment handles, and then zooming in to
100% using the shortcut menu in the lower left corner of the screen.
Although there are no tools available, you can pan around by dragging the scroll bars alongside the
artwork area, or by pressing and holding the spacebar while dragging.
3 Experiment with Exposure, Gloss, and any other settings to create an interesting effect. No specific
settings are required. In this example an exposure value of -6 was used. A Gloss of -11 , Metallic of -2
and Ambience of 11 were also set.
